Why we started and what we actually care about
It is no coincidence that the PUDL brand ethos is built around three words: BREAK THE STIGMA. Everything else — the locally-made ceramics, the quality accessories from our international partners — exists in service of that idea.
How PUDL started
Hi, I’m James. I started PUDL because I want to help reduce the stigma around cannabis in Australia. I’ve never identified with the term ‘stoner’ — and I don’t think most people who use cannabis do either. I built this for them. For us.
My cannabis story started with a pretty unglamorous problem: I couldn’t sleep. Severe insomnia for as long as I can remember — through uni, through work, into marriage. Years of lying awake while my wife tried to sleep beside me. Both of us exhausted by something I couldn’t fix. I tried everything the doctor suggested. None of it worked.
Cannabis did. A small dose in the evening changed my sleep, and in doing that, changed just about everything else — my energy, my focus, my anxiety, my relationship. My wife finally got to sleep next to someone who wasn’t restless. I finally felt what rested actually felt like.
But there was one problem I hadn’t solved yet.
I wanted quality objects to use as part of that nightly ritual. Things I was actually proud to have on show. And I couldn’t find them. Melbourne has plenty of smoke shops — but nothing in them would look right on our coffee table. Nothing felt considered. So I built the store I was looking for.
What “break the stigma” actually means
Cannabis stigma runs deep in Australia. Most people who use it do so privately, apologetically, with accessories that signal they think it’s something to be hidden.
I think that’s backwards. The ritual deserves better. Not because smoking is beyond criticism — but because adults who’ve made a considered choice deserve to do it with objects that reflect that.
Breaking the stigma doesn’t mean being loud about it. It means the Folded Ashtray on your coffee table without apology. The Sigaretta Lighter in your pocket because it’s genuinely the best lighter you’ve owned. The Storage Jar on your shelf because it looks like it belongs there. Quiet, considered, unapologetic.
“The ritual deserves better. Not because smoking is something to celebrate without question — but because adults who’ve made a considered choice deserve to do it with objects that reflect that.”
Why we make our ceramics in Melbourne
The ashtrays, the incense burners, the storage jar — all handmade in Melbourne (the Dandenongs, specifically), from locally-sourced clay and glazes.
When something is made by hand, by a specific person, in a specific place, you know what you’re getting. The variation between pieces isn’t a flaw — it’s the signature. Not a defect. Evidence that someone made it.
Why we stock the brands we stock
Every brand in the PUDL range was chosen for the same reason: I use them myself.
Tsubota Pearl make lighters in Tokyo by hand, with precision, built to last. Their flint wheel has a specific, satisfying resistance that a disposable lighter will never replicate. Once you’ve used one, going back feels like a step backwards.
Holk make rolling papers in Sweden from FSC-certified paper with a hidden message inside every pack. A small detail that makes the whole product feel like it was made by people who thought about the experience, not just the function.
House of Puff make ceramic accessories in New York from food-safe stoneware — designed to sit on a tablescape, not hide in a drawer. Founded by two women who were tired of accessories that assumed their user wanted to conceal them.
Addition Studio make incense in Australia from all-natural essential oils, including native Australian botanicals — blue gum, lemon myrtle, white cypress. The scents are designed to uplift, ground, and reset your space — before or after you smoke.
What we’re building toward
PUDL is a work in progress. Premium grinders, proper airtight storage, rolling tools — all coming. We’re not rushing to stock things before they’re right. Everything added will meet the same standard as what’s already here.
The goal hasn’t changed: a store where every product is worth owning, nothing is there to fill space, and the whole thing reflects a genuine belief that the ritual deserves to be done properly.
That’s PUDL. Browse the full range.
